How do I restore dial tone when a landline goes straight to voicemail?

Answer

Unplug every phone, wait several minutes, then test one corded phone on a single jack. If that fails, test at the Network Interface Device (NID) to see whether the problem is inside wiring or the carrier line.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Only open the customer side of the NID. Do not tamper with sealed carrier compartments.
  • Do not share account numbers or one-time codes with unexpected callers offering to “fix the line” for a fee.

Follow these steps

  1. Unplug all phones from the wall jacks

Disconnect every phone and fax device from their wall jacks. Leave them unplugged for about five minutes.

You should see: No devices remain connected to the phone line.

  2. Test one corded phone on a single jack

Plug one basic corded phone into one wall jack and listen for dial tone. Try a second jack only if the first has none.

You should see: You hear a clear dial tone, or you confirm there is still no dial tone on the jack.

  3. Test at the NID customer test jack

Open the customer-accessible side of the network interface device, unplug the house wiring plug inside, and connect the corded phone directly to the test jack.

You should see: Dial tone at the NID means the issue is likely inside house wiring; no dial tone at the NID points to a carrier line problem.

  4. Report the result to your phone provider

If the NID has no dial tone, contact your landline provider and report an outside-line outage. If the NID has dial tone but jacks do not, arrange inside-wiring repair.

You should see: You have a clear next step: carrier repair order or inside wiring work.

Extra tips

What to look for: Presence or absence of dial tone on a basic corded phone, and whether the NID test jack has dial tone when house wiring is disconnected.

Before you change anything: Unplug phones gently; note which jacks you used. Use a simple corded phone for testing if you have one. Do not open sealed carrier equipment beyond the customer-accessible NID compartment. Have your account ready if you need to report a line outage.
