How do I cancel or remove one phone number from an account?

Answer

Sign into the official account site or app for that service, open phone number or security settings, and remove or replace the number you no longer want. For carrier lines, use the carrier account portal or support chat to cancel that specific line.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Removing your only recovery phone can lock you out of the account.
  • Do not share one-time codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly about canceling service.

Follow these steps

  1. Decide account recovery versus carrier line

If the number is only used to sign in or receive codes, plan to update security settings. If it is a paid mobile line, plan to change the carrier account instead.

You should see: You know which official portal to use.

  2. Update or remove the number in account security

For an online account, sign in on the official website or app, open security or phone number settings, and remove or replace the old number after adding a new recovery method if needed.

You should see: The unwanted number no longer appears as a login or recovery option.

  3. Cancel one line with the carrier if needed

For paid service, sign into the carrier account, open lines or device details, and follow cancel or remove line for only that number. Save any confirmation number.

You should see: The carrier shows that line as canceled or scheduled to end.

  4. Confirm texts and bills afterward

Send yourself a test verification text on any remaining recovery phone, and check the next bill or email confirmation so only the intended number was changed.

You should see: The removed number no longer receives account codes, and billing matches the remaining service.

Extra tips

What to look for: Account settings labeled phone number, mobile number, recovery phone, or line details on a carrier bill

Before you change anything: Identify the exact company: carrier, email, banking, or social app. Make sure you can still sign in with a password or another recovery method. Note whether you are removing a recovery number or canceling paid phone service. Never share account codes with unexpected callers.
