How do I fix a black screen in the Facebook app on iPhone or iPad?

Answer

A black Facebook app screen on iPhone or iPad is usually a stuck app session or an outdated build. Restart the device, update Facebook from the App Store, then offload or reinstall the app if the screen stays black.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Reinstall Facebook only from the official App Store, not from links in messages or popups.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart the device

Fully restart the iPhone or iPad, then open Facebook again from the home screen.

You should see: Facebook shows its normal interface, or the black screen returns.

  2. Update Facebook from the App Store

Open the App Store, search for Facebook, and install any available update. Then relaunch the app.

You should see: Facebook opens past the black screen after updating.

  3. Force close and reopen

Swipe up to the app switcher, swipe Facebook away to close it, then open it again. Also try Wi-Fi off/on or a different network if the splash never finishes.

You should see: Facebook reloads cleanly, or still stays black.

  4. Offload or reinstall Facebook

Go to Settings > General > iPhone/iPad Storage > Facebook, tap Offload App, then reinstall. If needed, delete the app and download Facebook again from the App Store only.

You should see: A fresh Facebook install loads the feed or login screen normally.

Extra tips

What to look for: Facebook launches but the display stays fully black, with or without a brief splash screen, on iPhone or iPad.

Before you change anything: Confirm other apps still display normally so the whole screen is not the problem. Note whether you are signed in or stuck before login. Prefer Offload App before deleting if you want to keep documents and data when available. Never share Facebook passwords or codes with unexpected callers.
