How do I fix a Kindle order error when buying or downloading books?

Answer

This usually means Amazon could not complete the payment or account check for that purchase. Restarting the Kindle, confirming the payment method on Amazon, and retrying the order from the Amazon account often clears a temporary order error.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Only enter payment details on Amazon's official website, app, or Kindle store screens.
  • Signing out of the Amazon account on a Kindle removes access to purchased content on that device until you sign back in.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart the Kindle fully

Hold the power button and choose Restart, or turn the Kindle all the way off and back on rather than only waking it from sleep.

You should see: The Kindle reboots cleanly and reconnects to Wi-Fi.

  2. Confirm the Amazon payment method

On a computer or phone, sign in at Amazon, open Your Account payment settings, and confirm the default card or balance is valid.

You should see: Amazon shows an up-to-date payment method with no obvious billing error.

  3. Retry the purchase from Amazon

Try buying or sending the book again from Amazon's website or app to the registered Kindle, then sync the device.

You should see: The order completes, or Amazon shows a clearer payment or account error.

  4. Sign out and back into the Kindle store

If the order still fails only on the Kindle, open the Kindle's account or store settings, sign out of the Amazon account, sign back in, and try one more purchase.

You should see: The store session refreshes and the order either succeeds or shows a specific new error.

Extra tips

What to look for: The exact message we were unable to process your order at this time, and whether the same purchase fails in a web browser on Amazon as well as on the Kindle.

Before you change anything: Confirm you are signed into the correct Amazon account on the Kindle. Check that the payment method on Amazon is valid and has available funds. Avoid entering card details on any page that is not Amazon's official site or app. Do not factory-reset the Kindle before trying a restart and payment check.
