How do I fix a Kindle screen that stops responding to touch while reading?

Answer

Hold the power button for a full restart (about 40 seconds) until the screen blanks and the Kindle restarts. A frozen touchscreen after long reading is usually cleared by that hard restart; charge and cable checks come next if it stays frozen.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Avoid factory reset until a restart and charge attempt fail, because reset removes personal documents and settings from the device.

Follow these steps

  1. Force-restart the Kindle

Press and hold the power button for about 40 seconds, even if the screen seems frozen. Release when the screen goes blank or the device restarts, then wait for it to finish booting.

You should see: The Kindle restarts and the Home screen or current book responds to taps.

  2. Test page turns after restart

Open the book you were reading and try turning pages, opening the toolbar, and returning to the library.

You should see: Touch controls work again for reading and navigation.

  3. Charge with a known-good cable if it stays frozen

If taps still fail, connect the Kindle to a working USB cable and power source for at least 30 minutes, then repeat the long-press restart.

You should see: The battery indicator changes or the device becomes responsive after charging and restart.

  4. Check for Kindle software update when touch returns

When the screen works again, connect to Wi-Fi and check Settings for a software update so freezes are less likely to return.

You should see: The Kindle is current, or you know an update is available to install.

Extra tips

What to look for: A readable screen that ignores taps to turn pages or open books, with battery still showing charge and no useful on-screen error.

Before you change anything: Note the battery percentage and whether the screen image is still visible. Prefer a restart before a factory reset so your library download state is preserved. Have the USB cable and a power source ready if the restart fails. Never share Amazon account passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
