How do I stop pop-ups on an Android phone that still mostly works?

Pop-ups that linger after the phone otherwise works are usually caused by a browser site permission, notification spam, or a leftover cleaner/PDF app—not by a broken Google account. Block pop-ups in the browser, review notifications, then remove apps you do not recognize.

- Stop if a pop-up asks you to pay a fee, call a support number, or install unknown software to “clean” the phone.
Follow these steps
Block pop-ups in the browser
Open Chrome (or your default browser) > Settings (or the three-dot menu) > Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects, and turn Block on. Also check Notifications for the browser and turn off any sites you do not recognize.
You should see: Pop-ups and redirects are blocked for new sites, and unwanted site notifications can be turned off.
Clear the site that keeps interrupting
In the same Site settings area, open the site or app that keeps showing ads or alerts and choose Clear & reset or Remove permissions / Clear data for that site only.
You should see: That site’s stored permissions and data are cleared so it cannot keep prompting.
Review phone notifications
Open Settings > Notifications and look for apps that send frequent ads or “virus found” style alerts. Turn off notifications for any you do not trust, or open the app and disable promotional alerts.
You should see: Only apps you expect can send notifications.
Remove suspicious apps
Open Settings > Apps and look for cleaners, virus scanners, PDF tools, or apps you do not remember installing. Uninstall anything you do not recognize, especially if it appeared around the time the pop-ups started.

Test PDF and browser behavior

Update the browser and restart
Update Chrome (or your browser) from the Play Store, then restart the phone and use it for a short while to confirm the alerts stay away.
