How do I fix a phone that went dead and will not power back on?

Answer

When a phone goes fully dead, charge it for at least 30 minutes with a known-good cable and charger, then try the model’s force-restart sequence. If there is still no logo or charging icon, test another cable or charger and see whether a computer detects the phone.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A swollen battery, burning smell, or extreme heat means stop charging and seek service immediately.
  • Do not share passwords, recovery codes, or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly about the dead phone.

Follow these steps

  1. Charge for a full half hour

Plug the phone into a working wall charger and leave it undisturbed for at least 30 minutes. Watch for a battery icon, LED, or any on-screen sign of life.

You should see: A charging indicator appears, or you confirm there is still no response.

  2. Try a force restart

Use the force-restart method for your phone brand. On many iPhones, press volume up, volume down, then hold the side button. On many Androids, hold power and volume down for about 10–20 seconds.

You should see: The phone vibrates or shows a logo and begins booting.

  3. Swap cable and charger

If nothing appears, repeat charging with a different cable and power adapter that you know work elsewhere.

You should see: You rule out a failed cable or brick as the reason the phone stays dead.

  4. Check computer detection

Connect the phone to a computer and see whether it appears in Finder, Apple Devices/iTunes, or as a portable device on Windows.

You should see: The computer either recognizes the phone for recovery options or shows no device.

  5. Stop and get hardware help if needed

If there is no charge icon, no force-restart response, and no computer detection, seek the manufacturer or a trusted repair shop rather than opening the phone yourself.

You should see: You have completed safe owner-level checks and can pursue repair.

Extra tips

What to look for: Any charging icon, LED, vibration, heat while charging, or Apple/Android logo after a force restart.

Before you change anything: Try a charger and cable that already work on another device. Avoid cheap unknown chargers if the phone feels hot or swollen. Do not factory reset until the phone can boot and you can back up. Never share account passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
