Why won’t Voice Memos record on my iPhone?

If Voice Memos will not record, the microphone permission is often off, storage is full, or another app is using the mic. Check Microphone access for Voice Memos, free some storage, then try a new recording.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Recording phone calls may be restricted by law in your area; only record when you are allowed to do so.
- Avoid third-party apps that demand payment or broad device access just to “unlock” recording.
Follow these steps
Allow Microphone access for Voice Memos
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn on access for Voice Memos. If Voice Memos is missing from the list, open Voice Memos once, then check again.
You should see: Microphone is enabled for Voice Memos.
Start a simple test recording
Open Voice Memos, tap the red Record button, speak for a few seconds, then tap Stop. Play the memo back.
You should see: A new memo appears and playback has audible sound.
Free storage and close mic conflicts
If recording still fails, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and free space if storage is nearly full. Close other apps, end any calls or voice chats, then try Voice Memos again.
You should see: Recording starts after storage or microphone conflicts are cleared.
Decide if you need call recording instead
If the goal is to record a phone call, know that Voice Memos records the device microphone and may not capture the other caller clearly. Use only legal, supported methods for your location—do not rely on unknown call-recorder apps.
You should see: You either capture ambient audio with Voice Memos or choose a different, legal approach for calls.
