How do I fix buying the wrong app, subscription, or in-app package on iPhone?

Answer

If the wrong purchase was made through Apple on iPhone, cancel any unwanted subscription under Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions, then request a refund through Apple’s official Report a Problem page for that charge. Refunds are not guaranteed, so act quickly and keep the order email or purchase record.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Third-party sites that promise guaranteed App Store refunds for a fee are often scams.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm what was purchased

On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then tap Media & Purchases or Subscriptions / Purchase History (wording varies by iOS version). Find the wrong package name, amount, and date so you know whether it is a one-time item or a subscription.

You should see: You can identify the exact wrong purchase and whether it auto-renews.

  2. Cancel an unwanted subscription

If the wrong item is a subscription, go to Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions, open it, and tap Cancel Subscription. This stops the next renewal even if a refund is later denied.

You should see: The subscription shows it will not renew, or it is already expired.

  3. Request a refund from Apple

On a web browser, open Apple’s official Report a Problem / request a refund page, sign in with the purchasing Apple Account, select the wrong package, choose a reason such as accidental purchase, and submit. Use only Apple’s site—not a random refund broker.

You should see: Apple accepts the refund request for review, or explains that the item is not eligible.

  4. Check merchant refunds for non-Apple charges

If the package was sold inside an app but billed by the developer’s own website or another store, contact that merchant’s support with the order number. Apple can refund only purchases billed through the App Store / Apple Account.

You should see: You are pursuing the refund with the company that actually charged you.

  5. Watch for the decision and avoid repeat charges

Wait for Apple’s email decision. Turn off app-specific one-tap purchase options if needed, and use Screen Time purchase restrictions if accidental buys keep happening on a shared iPhone.

You should see: You know the refund outcome and have reduced the chance of another accidental purchase.

Extra tips

What to look for: The App Store or subscription purchase confirmation, the exact package name, whether it is a one-time buy or auto-renewing subscription, and the charge on your Apple Account purchase history.

Before you change anything: Do not enter your Apple password on third-party refund websites. Screenshot the purchase name, price, and date. Cancel a subscription first if it will renew again. Never share verification codes with unexpected callers.
