How do I set up an iPhone eSIM when the QR code is unavailable?
Answer
When the carrier QR code is unavailable, most iPhones can still activate cellular by adding the eSIM manually from Settings > Cellular, or by using the carrier’s official activation flow instead of scanning a code.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Avoid third-party sites that ask for payment or account details just to generate an eSIM QR code.
Follow these steps
Finish basic setup without the QR code
If the setup screen is stuck on scanning a QR code, look for options such as Set Up Later, Enter Details Manually, or Use Carrier Activation instead of forcing the QR scan.
You should see: You can leave the QR screen and continue into the Home Screen or Cellular settings.
Add the eSIM from Cellular settings
Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Add eSIM. Choose the carrier’s listed plan if shown, or choose Enter Details Manually / Use QR Code only if your carrier gave you a working code.
You should see: The phone starts downloading the eSIM or asks for a carrier login or activation details.
Use the carrier’s official activation path
If Add eSIM cannot find a plan, sign in through your carrier’s official app or website and request eSIM activation or a transfer for this phone’s IMEI/EID.
You should see: The carrier issues a new eSIM or pushes a plan that the iPhone can install.
Confirm cellular is active
After the eSIM installs, open Settings > Cellular and confirm a line appears with signal bars, then place a test call or check mobile data.
You should see: Cellular shows as On with a working signal, and Finish Setting Up Cellular is no longer needed.
Contact the carrier if activation still fails
If every attempt fails with QR unavailable, ask the carrier to confirm the line supports eSIM, is not still tied to an old device, and that they can send a fresh activation method.
You should see: The carrier clears an account or device lock issue, or provides a working alternate activation method.

Extra tips
What to look for: A Finish Setting Up Cellular prompt, a QR code unavailable message, or an Add eSIM / Set Up Cellular option in Settings
Before you change anything: Confirm which carrier the phone should use and that the line is active on your account. Have the phone connected to Wi‑Fi before trying eSIM setup. Use only the carrier’s official app, website, or account tools for activation codes. Do not share account passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
