Should I replace an iPhone battery at 84% maximum capacity?

Answer

An iPhone at around 84% Maximum Capacity can drain faster than when new, especially if Peak Performance Capability shows reduced performance. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging, then decide on an official battery service if runtime no longer meets your day. Replacement is optional at 84% unless Apple diagnostics or your usage needs justify it.

Follow these steps

  1. Read Battery Health & Charging

Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Note Maximum Capacity and the Peak Performance Capability status or any service message.

You should see: You have the health percentage and whether performance management is mentioned.

  2. Review Battery usage for heavy drains

In Settings → Battery, check the last 24 hours and 10 days charts. Look for a single app or Background Activity that explains the early drain before you replace hardware.

You should see: You know whether software use is the main drain or the battery health is the clearer cause.

  3. Decide on replacement

If Maximum Capacity is around 84% and the phone still cannot last your day after normal use, schedule battery service through Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Bring the backup you made.

You should see: You either book service or keep monitoring if runtime is still acceptable.

  4. After a new battery, confirm health

When the phone returns, reopen Battery Health & Charging and confirm Maximum Capacity is restored near 100% and Peak Performance Capability looks normal.

You should see: Battery health reflects the replacement and daytime runtime improves.

Extra tips

What to look for: Maximum Capacity percentage, Peak Performance Capability messages, unexpected shutdown notices, and whether Battery Health & Charging is available on your iOS version.

Before you change anything: Back up the iPhone to iCloud or a computer before service. Use Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for battery replacement when possible. Avoid unknown shops that ask you to disable Find My without explaining warranty impact. Do not install untrusted battery apps that demand full device control.
