How do I restore an Android phone’s display look after a game changed it?
Answer
Games and launchers can change wallpaper, dark mode, display size, refresh rate, or the default home app. Restoring the previous look usually means reversing those Display and Home settings, then clearing the game’s display-related permissions if needed.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- A factory reset will erase personal data; use it only after Display and Home settings fail to restore the look.
Follow these steps
Check Display settings
Open Settings > Display and review Dark theme, Brightness, Font size, Display size, Colors, and Smooth/refresh-rate options. Return each one to your preferred values.
You should see: The screen brightness, colors, and text size look closer to the original setup.
Restore wallpaper and theme
Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen, or open Settings > Wallpaper and style / Themes, then set your previous wallpaper and theme.
You should see: The home screen and lock screen use your chosen background again.
Confirm the default Home app
Open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app and select your usual launcher if a game or third-party launcher took over.
You should see: Pressing Home returns you to the familiar home screen layout.
Review the game’s permissions
Open Settings > Apps, select the game, and check permissions or additional settings for overlay, theme, or nearby-device access that could alter the display. Turn off anything you do not need.
You should see: The game no longer has unnecessary control over display or overlay behavior.
Restart the phone
Power the phone off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on and check the home screen and Display settings again.
You should see: The restored look remains after reboot.

Extra tips
What to look for: What specifically changed: wallpaper, icons, dark mode, font size, color mode, or a different home screen launcher
Before you change anything: Note what looks different now compared with before the game. Confirm whether a third-party launcher or theme app was installed with the game. Avoid factory reset until Display and Home settings have been checked. Do not install “screen fixer” apps from unknown sources.
