How do I set up Apple Watch sleep tracking so stages show correctly?

Answer

If Health shows some Time Asleep but missing stages, sleep tracking is usually partly working. Confirm Sleep Focus, wrist detection, charge level, and watchOS/iOS updates; incomplete stage data often comes from the watch not wearing through the night or Sleep not fully enabled.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Deleting sleep history in Health removes past samples and cannot always be recovered.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm Sleep is enabled on Apple Watch

On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app, go to Sleep (or Focus > Sleep related options), and turn on Sleep tracking / Sleep Focus schedule so the watch knows when to track overnight.

You should see: Sleep is scheduled or enabled and the watch is set to track during your bedtime window.

  2. Review recorded sleep samples

Open the Health app, tap Browse > Sleep > Show All Data, and check whether any sleep sessions were saved for recent nights.

You should see: You see sleep duration entries, or you confirm that no overnight samples were recorded.

  3. Check wear, fit, and battery

Wear the watch snugly overnight, keep Wrist Detection on, and start the night with enough charge for your sleep schedule. Avoid charging off-wrist for most of the night if you want stage data.

You should see: The next morning, Health shows a fuller sleep session for that night.

  4. Update and re-sync the devices

Update iOS and watchOS, keep the iPhone nearby overnight or in the morning so the watch can sync, then open Health again after syncing.

You should see: Sleep duration and available stages appear after the devices sync.

  5. Compare stage support for your watch

If duration appears but stages never do, confirm your Apple Watch model and watchOS version support sleep stages, then retry for another full night with Sleep enabled.

You should see: You either see REM/Core/Deep after a complete tracked night, or you confirm the watch/software combination does not provide stages.

Extra tips

What to look for: Time Asleep appearing in Health while REM, Core, or Deep stages are missing or blank

Before you change anything: Wear the Apple Watch snugly overnight and keep it charged above the level needed to finish sleep tracking. Confirm you are changing settings in the Watch and Health apps on your paired iPhone. Update watchOS and iOS before changing advanced sleep settings. Do not share Apple ID passwords with anyone offering to “fix” Health data.
