How do I fix Fisher & Paykel CPAP error code 450?

Answer

Error 450 on a Fisher & Paykel CPAP often points to a humidifier or heater-plate fault. Power the machine fully off, unplug it for about a minute, reseat the humidifier chamber, and power back on. If 450 returns or the plate never warms, stop using heat/humidity features and contact Fisher & Paykel or your equipment provider—do not open or repair the hot plate yourself.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not open the humidifier hot plate or attempt electrical repairs—shock and fire risk, and it can void warranty.
  • If the device smells of burning plastic or the plate overheats, unplug it and stop use until a technician inspects it.

Follow these steps

  1. Power-cycle the CPAP

Turn the machine off, unplug the power supply from the wall (or switch the power strip off), wait about one minute, then plug it back in and power on.

You should see: The machine restarts cleanly, and you can see whether error 450 returns.

  2. Reseat the humidifier chamber

With power unplugged, remove the water chamber, check for cracks or poor seating, refill only to the marked max line with distilled water if your clinician recommends humidity, then click the chamber firmly back into place.

You should see: The chamber sits flush and the machine no longer reports an obvious seating issue.

  3. Retest without assuming a DIY repair

Power on and start therapy briefly as directed by your clinician. Note whether 450 appears immediately and whether the humidifier area stays cold when humidity is on.

You should see: Either the error clears, or 450 returns and you have clear symptoms to report.

  4. Contact Fisher & Paykel or your equipment provider

If error 450 persists or the hot plate seems broken, stop using the heated humidifier and contact Fisher & Paykel support or the durable medical equipment company that supplied the unit. Ask about warranty replacement of the humidifier assembly.

You should see: You receive service, replacement, or clinical guidance; you do not attempt to repair the heater plate yourself.

Extra tips

What to look for: On-screen error code 450, whether humidification is enabled, unusual smells or heat from the plate, and whether the error returns immediately after a power reset.

Before you change anything: Unplug the machine before checking the water chamber. Empty and dry the chamber if you remove it. Do not disassemble the heater plate or bypass safety covers. Have your device model and serial number ready if you call support.
