How do I unlock a Google Pixel phone after forgetting the passcode?

Answer

If the Pixel passcode is forgotten and no other unlock method works, the usual recovery path is Android Recovery Mode and a factory data reset. That erases apps and local data on the phone, then you sign back in with the Google account that was on the device.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A factory data reset permanently deletes local data that was not backed up.

Follow these steps

  1. Boot into Recovery Mode

Force-restart into Android Recovery using your Pixel’s button combo (often Power plus Volume down, then choose Recovery mode). Exact buttons can vary by Pixel model—follow the on-screen boot menu.

You should see: An Android Recovery screen appears, often with a small Android figure or a text menu.

  2. Open the recovery menu

If you see a No command screen, hold Power and tap Volume up once to open the recovery menu. Use the volume buttons to move and Power to select.

You should see: A list of recovery options is visible, including Factory data reset or Wipe data/factory reset.

  3. Choose Factory data reset

Highlight Factory data reset (or Wipe data/factory reset), press Power to select it, then confirm Yes when asked. Wait until the wipe finishes.

You should see: The phone erases user data and returns to the recovery menu or reboots toward setup.

  4. Reboot and set up with Google

Select Reboot system now if needed, then complete setup. Sign in with the same Google account that was on the phone before the reset.

You should see: The Pixel starts setup and accepts the previous Google account, or clearly says which account is required.

Extra tips

What to look for: The Recovery Mode menu options such as Recovery mode and Factory data reset, and any prompt for the previous Google account after the wipe.

Before you change anything: Accept that a factory reset deletes photos, apps, and files stored only on the phone. Confirm you know the Google account email and password that were on this Pixel. Charge the phone enough to complete a reset and setup. Do not give the passcode or Google password to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
