How do I remove an old Apple ID email from a phone given to someone else?

Sign out of the previous Apple ID on that iPhone, remove the old email from iMessage/FaceTime if it still appears, then erase the iPhone and set it up with the new person’s Apple ID. If an email is already taken, that address belongs to an existing Apple ID and cannot be reused until it is removed from the old account.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Erasing the iPhone deletes apps and local data on that device; back up first if anything must be kept.
- Stop if a site or popup asks for payment to unlock Activation Lock or free an email address.
Follow these steps
Sign out of the previous Apple ID
On the iPhone, go to Settings > [old owner’s name]. Tap Sign Out. Enter the Apple ID password if asked, and choose whether to keep a local copy of data before signing out.
You should see: Settings no longer shows the previous owner’s Apple ID at the top.
Clear old iMessage and FaceTime addresses
Open Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and Settings > FaceTime. Remove any reachability addresses that belong to the previous owner.
You should see: The old email no longer appears as a FaceTime or iMessage reach-at address on that phone.
Erase the iPhone for the new user
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. If Activation Lock appears, the previous owner must sign in and remove the device from their Apple ID / Find My.
You should see: The phone restarts at the setup screen as a clean device.
Set up with the new person’s Apple ID
During setup, sign in with the new user’s existing Apple ID, or create one using an email address that is not already registered to Apple.
You should see: Setup completes under the new Apple ID without the previous owner’s email attached.
If the email is already taken
Use a different email for the new Apple ID, or have the owner of that email sign in at appleid.apple.com and remove/change the address there before it can be reused.
You should see: Either a new unused email works for account creation, or the old address is released from the previous Apple ID.

What to look for: Messages like “You can be reached by FaceTime at,” Apple ID screens still showing the old email, or “This email address is already in use / already taken” during new account setup.
Before you change anything: Both people should know which Apple ID email and password belong to the old owner. Back up anything the new user needs to keep before erasing the phone.
