How do I fix Gmail on iPhone when it says it cannot sign in?

Answer

Remove the stuck Google account from the iPhone, then add it again with the Google password and any verification prompts so mail can sync.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm the account works on the web

On a computer or phone browser, open Google sign-in and confirm the same Gmail account accepts your password.

You should see: The account works on the web, or you recover access before fixing the iPhone app.

  2. Remove the Google account from the iPhone

Open Settings, then go to Gmail app settings or Settings > Mail > Accounts, select the Google account, and remove it from the phone.

You should see: The stuck Google account is no longer listed on the iPhone.

  3. Add the account again

Reopen Gmail or Mail, choose Add Account > Google, enter the password, and complete any verification prompts.

You should see: The account signs in successfully and folders begin syncing.

  4. Refresh mail and wait briefly

Force-close and reopen Gmail, pull to refresh, and give it a minute to download messages.

You should see: New and recent emails appear without the previous sign-in error.

Extra tips

What to look for: A Can't sign in to your Google Account message, mail that no longer refreshes, and whether the same Google account still works on a computer browser

Before you change anything: Confirm you know the Google account password or have access to recovery methods. Make sure you can receive Google verification codes on a trusted device or phone number. Do not delete the Gmail app unless re-adding the account fails. Never share your Google password with anyone offering to fix mail access.
