Why is an old subscription on my new phone instead of the one I want?
Answer
App subscriptions usually follow the store account (Apple ID or Google account), not the physical phone. The new phone shows whichever subscription is linked to the account currently signed in on that device.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Canceling a subscription on the wrong account can end paid access unexpectedly.
Follow these steps
Identify which store account is on the new phone
On iPhone, open Settings and check the name/email at the top (Apple ID). On Android, open Google Play Store > profile > payments or account. Note the account currently signed in.
You should see: You know exactly which store account the new phone is using.
Compare with the account that owns the subscription you want
On the old phone (or in account settings online), open Subscriptions for that store account and confirm which email owns the plan you want to keep.
You should see: You can tell whether the desired subscription is on the same account as the new phone or a different one.
Restore the correct subscription
If the desired subscription is on another account, sign into that Apple ID or Google account on the new phone (or use the app’s Restore Purchases after signing in). If the unwanted plan is on this account, open Subscriptions and cancel or ignore that plan instead of expecting the phone itself to switch plans.
You should see: The app reflects the subscription tied to the account you signed in with.
Decide whether to keep both accounts separate
If family members use different store accounts, keep the subscription on the account that pays for it and avoid mixing purchases across accounts. Use Family Sharing only if your store and app support sharing that specific subscription.
You should see: You have a clear plan for which account owns the subscription going forward.

Extra tips
What to look for: Which Apple ID or Google account is signed in on the new phone, and which account shows the subscription under Subscriptions
Before you change anything: Write down which email or Apple ID/Google account was used on the old phone. Do not delete the app or cancel a subscription until you know which account owns it. Avoid signing into stranger accounts or sharing store passwords. Never share verification codes with unexpected callers.
