How do I stop iPhone Mail from deleting messages a few hours after they arrive?
Answer
When mail vanishes from iPhone but still exists on a computer, the usual cause is another device or mailbox setting removing or moving messages—often POP download behavior, a wrong Deleted Mailbox mapping, or aggressive remove-from-server timing. Check the Mail account type and deletion settings on iPhone, then look for other devices signed into the same account.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Stop before removing the Mail account from the iPhone if you are unsure whether local-only copies would be lost.
Follow these steps
Open the Mail account on iPhone
Go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts and select the account that is losing messages (for example a TDS account). Note whether advanced settings show IMAP or POP.
You should see: You can see the account type and mailbox behavior options for that account.
Fix Deleted Mailbox mapping
Open the mailbox behavior or advanced settings and set Deleted Mailbox to the provider’s Trash folder, not Inbox, Archive, or another custom folder.
You should see: Deleted items are pointed at Trash instead of a folder that hides or purges mail unexpectedly.
Stop automatic removal from the server
If you see Remove, Delete from server, or Leave messages on server, choose Never / leave messages on server unless you intentionally want the phone to erase server copies after a short time. For POP accounts, prefer switching to IMAP with your provider’s guidance when possible.
You should see: The phone is no longer scheduled to remove messages from the server after a few hours.
Check other devices and Archive
On webmail or the laptop, search All Mail and Archive for one missing message. Also review any other phone, tablet, or app signed into the same account—deletes or moves elsewhere sync back to the iPhone.
You should see: You either recover the message location or identify another device that is moving or deleting mail.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether the account type is POP or IMAP, the Deleted Mailbox folder mapping, the Remove / delete-from-server timing, and whether All Mail or Archive still contains the missing messages.
Before you change anything: Do not delete the Mail account until you understand what will be removed from the phone. Note the email provider (for example TDS) and whether other phones or apps use the same login. Search All Mail or Archive on the provider webmail before changing server settings. Never share your email password with unexpected callers.
