How do I fix an iPhone that says it is locked to owner?

Answer

Locked to Owner means Activation Lock is on. Only the Apple Account that was previously signed in can unlock it. Sign in with that account and password, or erase the device from Find My on iCloud.com if you still control the account. If you bought the phone used and cannot reach the previous owner, return it—Apple will not remove Activation Lock without proof you are the rightful owner.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Services that promise to bypass Locked to Owner or Activation Lock for a fee are scams and can put your data and money at risk.
  • Erasing an iPhone does not turn off Activation Lock; the previous Apple Account is still required unless the device is removed from Find My.

Follow these steps

  1. Identify whose Apple Account is locking the phone

Read the Activation Lock screen for the Apple Account email hint. If it is your account or a family account you manage, continue with that sign-in. If it belongs to a seller or unknown person, contact them to remove the device from their Find My list before you continue setup.

You should see: You know whether you can unlock the phone yourself or need the previous owner.

  2. Unlock with the previous Apple Account

On the Activation Lock screen, enter the Apple Account email and password that were used on the iPhone, then follow the on-screen steps to activate. Use account recovery only through Apple’s official forgot-password flow if you own the account but cannot remember the password.

You should see: The iPhone accepts the account and continues to the normal setup screens.

  3. Remove the device from Find My if you still control the account

On another device or computer you trust, go to iCloud.com/find or open Find My, sign in with the same Apple Account, select the iPhone, and choose Erase This Device / Remove This Device as shown for an offline or erased phone. Then retry activation on the iPhone.

You should see: The device is removed from the account’s Find My list and Activation Lock clears on the next activation attempt.

  4. Handle a used phone you cannot unlock

If you do not have the previous owner’s Apple Account, ask the seller to sign in and remove the iPhone from Find My, or return the phone for a refund. Do not install bypass software or pay unlock services.

You should see: Either the seller removes Activation Lock, or you return the device instead of keeping a locked phone.

  5. Contact Apple only with proof of ownership

If the iPhone is yours and you can provide the original proof of purchase that matches the serial number, contact Apple Support for Activation Lock help. They will not remove the lock based on a vague story or a third-party receipt alone.

You should see: Apple either helps after verifying ownership, or explains what proof is still required.

Extra tips

What to look for: Messages such as Locked to Owner, Activation Lock, or a prompt for the previous Apple Account email during setup.

Before you change anything: Do not pay a stranger or website that claims they can bypass Activation Lock. Gather proof of purchase if you need Apple Support for a device you own. If the phone is not yours, stop and contact the seller instead of guessing passwords. Never share your Apple Account password or verification codes with unexpected callers.
