What should I do after losing a mobile phone when I am using someone else’s phone?

Answer

From another phone or computer, use Find My iPhone / Find My Device if available, sign into the carrier account to review the latest bill or line status, then lock, erase, or suspend the lost phone and consider replacing the SIM or eSIM. Act quickly even if you are borrowing someone else’s phone.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Erasing a lost phone removes its data remotely and may be irreversible if you later find the device.

Follow these steps

  1. Try to locate or lock the lost phone

On a computer or the borrowed phone’s browser, open iCloud.com/find (for iPhone) or Google’s Find My Device (for Android), sign into the account that was on the lost phone, and choose Play Sound, Lost Mode/Secure Device, or Erase if recovery looks unlikely.

You should see: The lost phone is marked lost, locked, or erased, or you learn it is offline.

  2. Pull the carrier bill for the number

Open the carrier’s official app or website, sign in, then go to Billing, Statements, or Payment History and download or view the latest bill so you can confirm the phone number and account details on file.

You should see: You can see the lost line’s number and recent account activity.

  3. Suspend or protect the line

In the carrier account, suspend the lost line, request a SIM/eSIM replacement, or follow the carrier’s lost-phone steps so others cannot use the number for calls or account codes.

You should see: The carrier shows the line as suspended, replaced, or otherwise protected.

  4. Secure linked accounts

From a trusted device, change passwords for email, banking, and Apple/Google accounts that could receive codes on the lost phone, and turn on two-factor methods that do not rely only on that handset.

You should see: Critical accounts no longer depend solely on the missing phone for sign-in.

  5. Plan number transfer to a replacement

When you get a replacement phone, ask the carrier to activate the same number on the new SIM/eSIM after the lost device is suspended or erased.

You should see: Your number works on the replacement phone and the lost device stays locked out.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether Find My / Find My Device shows the phone online, the phone number on the latest carrier bill, and options to suspend service or replace the SIM.

Before you change anything: Use official Apple, Google, or carrier websites—type the address yourself. Have the lost phone’s number, account PIN, and Apple/Google login ready if possible. Tell the person whose phone you are borrowing before signing into your accounts on their device. Never share passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers claiming they found your phone.
