How do I report and secure an iPhone lost in Amsterdam?

Answer

Mark the iPhone as lost in Find My as soon as possible, then erase it remotely if you cannot recover it. Use Erase This Device, not Remove from Account, so Activation Lock stays on and the phone remains harder to reuse.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Remove from Account disconnects the iPhone from Find My and can weaken theft protection; avoid it while the phone is still missing.
  • Remote erase deletes personal data on the device once it comes online; make sure that is what you want before confirming.

Follow these steps

  1. Open Find My for the lost iPhone

On another Apple device, open the Find My app, tap Devices, and select the lost iPhone. Or go to iCloud.com on a computer, sign in, and open Find Devices.

You should see: The lost iPhone appears in the device list with a map location or a last-seen time.

  2. Mark As Lost first

Choose Mark As Lost (or Lost Mode), leave a phone number and message if offered, and confirm. This locks the screen with a passcode and can display your contact info.

You should see: The iPhone is marked lost and will lock when it next connects to the network.

  3. Erase only if recovery looks unlikely

If you will not get the phone back soon, choose Erase This Device. Do not choose Remove from Account while it is still missing, because that can turn off Find My protection.

You should see: Erase is queued or completed, and the device still stays linked for Activation Lock.

  4. Report to carrier and local police

Contact the mobile carrier to suspend the line and ask about IMEI blacklisting. File a local police report in Amsterdam if required for insurance or travel documents, and keep the case number.

You should see: The line is suspended or flagged, and you have a written report reference if needed.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the iPhone still appears online in Find My, the last known location on the map, and the choice between Mark As Lost, Erase This Device, and Remove from Account.

Before you change anything: Sign in with the Apple ID used on the lost iPhone. Use another iPhone, iPad, Mac, or a browser at iCloud.com. Write down the serial number or IMEI if you have the box or purchase email. Do not choose Remove from Account while the phone is still missing.
