How do I protect information on a lost iPhone that is powered off?

Use Find My on another Apple device or iCloud.com to mark the phone as Lost as soon as possible. Even if the phone is off, Lost Mode and Activation Lock usually stay in place so it cannot be easily erased and reused by someone else.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Erasing the device removes personal data from the phone when it comes online; only erase if you are ready to give up locating it first.
- Stop if a website or caller asks you to pay to unlock or track the phone outside Apple’s official Find My tools.
Follow these steps
Open Find My for your Apple ID
On another Apple device, open the Find My app and sign in with the same Apple ID. Or on a computer, go to iCloud.com, sign in, and open Find Devices (or Find iPhone).
You should see: You see a list of devices linked to that Apple ID, including the missing iPhone.
Select the missing iPhone
Choose the lost iPhone from the device list. It may show Offline if the battery is dead or the phone is powered off.
You should see: You can see device status and available actions such as Play Sound, Mark As Lost, or Erase This Device.
Turn on Lost Mode
Select Mark As Lost (or Lost Mode). Add a phone number where you can be reached and a short lock-screen message asking for the phone to be returned.
You should see: Lost Mode is pending or active. When the phone connects again, it should lock and show your message.
Change important account passwords
From a trusted device or computer, change passwords for Apple ID, email, banking, and other apps that may still be signed in on the missing phone.
You should see: Those accounts require the new password and are less useful if someone finds the phone.
Erase the device only if recovery looks unlikely
If you decide the phone will not be returned, use Erase This Device in Find My. Activation Lock usually remains tied to your Apple ID until you remove the device after erase completes.
You should see: A remote erase is queued or completed when the phone next comes online, helping remove personal data.
