How do I stop adware takeovers on a Google Pixel 9?

Boot the Pixel 9 into Safe Mode, then turn off Display over other apps for suspicious apps and uninstall anything you do not recognize. That usually stops ad overlays that block the home screen or browser.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Fake virus-cleanup ads are common; do not install apps or give remote access from those prompts.
- A factory reset erases local photos and files that are not backed up.
Follow these steps
Restart in Safe Mode
Press and hold Power and Volume up until the power menu appears, then touch and hold Power off and tap OK for Safe Mode. If the menu is hard to reach, hold Power and Volume down until the phone restarts, then hold Volume down during boot if your Pixel offers that recovery path, or use Google’s Pixel Safe Mode steps for your software version.
You should see: The phone restarts with Safe mode labeled on the screen and third-party apps are disabled.
Turn off overlay permissions
Go to Settings, Apps, Special app access, Display over other apps, and turn that off for any app you do not fully trust.
You should see: Suspicious apps can no longer draw ads on top of other screens.
Review all installed apps
Open Settings, Apps, See all apps, sort by last used or name, and uninstall unknown browsers, cleaners, or APK installers you do not remember installing.
You should see: Unfamiliar apps are removed while you are still in Safe Mode.
Disable remaining special access
Still under Special app access, check notification access and device admin apps, and turn off access for anything suspicious.
You should see: The adware can no longer keep itself pinned as a privileged app.
Reboot normally and test
Restart the Pixel out of Safe Mode and browse for a few minutes. If ads return, uninstall the newly active app or run Google Play Protect from the Play Store.
You should see: The home screen and browser work without takeover ads.

Extra tips
What to look for: Full-screen ads, fake system alerts, or browsers opening by themselves, and whether Safe Mode shows Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.
