What should I try if a phone will not respond to anything?

Answer

When a phone will not respond at all, start with a forced restart rather than settings changes. If the screen stays blank or frozen after that, check charging power next, then decide whether the issue is software recovery or hardware service.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A forced restart is different from erasing the phone; avoid factory reset until the device is responsive enough to back up.
  • Stop if a site or popup asks you to pay to unlock the device or install unknown software.

Follow these steps

  1. Charge with a known-good cable

Plug the phone into a wall charger and cable that already work on another device. Leave it connected for at least 15 to 30 minutes, watching for any battery icon or vibration.

You should see: A charging indicator appears, or the phone remains completely dark.

  2. Force-restart the phone

Use the forced-restart button combination for your phone type: for many iPhones, volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo; for many Androids, hold Power and Volume Down until the device restarts. This is not the same as a full erase.

You should see: The phone reboots to the lock screen or shows a logo and becomes responsive again.

  3. Test basic input after restart

If the phone boots, check whether touch, volume buttons, and mobile or Wi-Fi connectivity work. Open a simple app such as Phone or Settings to confirm the system is usable.

You should see: Normal controls work, or only specific features remain broken.

  4. Choose recovery or repair if it stays dead

If the phone still will not respond after charging and a forced restart, try connecting it to a computer for official recovery mode if you are comfortable doing so, or take it to the maker’s support or a trusted repair shop.

You should see: You either enter a recovery path or get a hardware diagnosis.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the screen is fully black, frozen on one image, or faintly backlit; whether the battery/charging indicator appears when plugged in; and whether a computer recognizes the phone at all.

Before you change anything: Try charging for at least 15 to 30 minutes with a known-good cable and adapter. Note whether the device is an iPhone or Android before choosing recovery steps. Back up later if the phone becomes responsive again. Do not pay an unexpected remote helper or share passwords to “unlock” a frozen phone.
