Why is there no service after moving a phone from U.S. Cellular to T-Mobile?

Answer

No service after switching from U.S. Cellular to T-Mobile is usually an incomplete number port, a SIM/eSIM that is not finished activating, or a phone that still needs T-Mobile network settings. Confirm the port status and that the T-Mobile SIM or eSIM is active before resetting the device.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A factory reset will not finish an incomplete number port and can erase phone data unnecessarily.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm what the status bar shows

Note whether the phone says No Service, Invalid SIM, emergency calls only, or briefly shows another carrier name. Also confirm the T-Mobile SIM is seated or the eSIM line is turned on in mobile network settings.

You should see: You have a clear status message and know the SIM/eSIM is present.

  2. Check port and activation status

On Wi-Fi, open the official T-Mobile app or account page and check whether the line and number transfer show as active. If the port from U.S. Cellular is still pending, wait for completion or contact T-Mobile with the port reference.

You should see: You know whether activation/port is complete or still processing.

  3. Refresh the mobile network

Toggle Airplane mode on for about 30 seconds, then off. Restart the phone and test a call or text after signal returns.

You should see: T-Mobile signal appears, or the same No Service state remains.

  4. Update carrier settings if offered

Connect to Wi-Fi and install any carrier settings or software update prompted for T-Mobile. On Android, also check that mobile data and the correct SIM are enabled.

You should see: Carrier settings are current and the correct line is selected.

  5. Contact T-Mobile with device details

If No Service continues after the port shows complete, contact T-Mobile support with the IMEI, whether you use SIM or eSIM, and the exact status-bar message so they can reprovision the line.

You should see: Support confirms provisioning or replaces a failed SIM/eSIM profile.

Extra tips

What to look for: "No Service," SIM errors, emergency-calls-only, or a different carrier name after inserting the T-Mobile SIM or installing the eSIM

Before you change anything: Have your account PIN / port-out info from U.S. Cellular ready if the transfer is incomplete. Note whether you are using a physical SIM or eSIM. Avoid a factory reset until activation is confirmed. Never share account PINs or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
