How do I set a first password when there is no current password?
Answer
If no password was ever created, do not use Change password. Go back to sign-in and choose Create account, Sign up, or Forgot password so the service can email a link or code to set the first password.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Stop if a page asks you to pay to unlock or reset the account.
Follow these steps
Leave the Change password screen
Cancel out of any form that demands a current password. That path is for people who already have a working password.
You should see: You are back at the main sign-in or account page.
Use Create account or Forgot password
On the official sign-in page, choose Create account, Sign up, or Forgot password, depending on whether the account is brand new or already created without a password.
You should see: The site offers an email link, code, or new-account form instead of asking for an old password.
Enter the account email for the first password
Enter the email address for the account so the service can send a link or code to set the first password. Open that message only from the official sender.
You should see: You receive a reset or invite message and can create a new password.
Sign in with the new password
Set a strong password, then return to sign-in and use the new password. Only after that should Change password be used for future updates.
You should see: Sign-in succeeds with the newly created password.

Extra tips
What to look for: A Change password form that requires Current password, versus Sign in options like Forgot password, Create account, or Sign up.
Before you change anything: Confirm the exact email or username for the account. Use only the official website or app for the product. Check spam for the reset or invite message. Never share one-time codes with unexpected callers.
