How do I unlock an iPhone to switch to another carrier?

Answer

Check Settings > General > About for Carrier Lock. If it says “No SIM restrictions,” the iPhone is already unlocked and you can insert the new carrier’s SIM or set up eSIM. If it says SIM locked, request the unlock from the carrier that originally sold or financed the phone—Apple generally cannot unlock a carrier lock.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Avoid third-party unlock services that ask for payment or remote access; use the original carrier’s official unlock process.

Follow these steps

  1. Check Carrier Lock status

On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and scroll to Carrier Lock (or Network Provider Lock). Wait a moment if the line is still loading.

You should see: You see either “No SIM restrictions” or a SIM locked / carrier locked status.

  2. If it shows No SIM restrictions

The phone is already unlocked. Insert the new carrier’s SIM or follow that carrier’s eSIM activation steps, then restart the iPhone if asked.

You should see: The new carrier’s signal and mobile data appear after activation.

  3. If it shows SIM locked

Contact the original carrier’s official unlock or bring-your-own-device support and request an unlock. Provide the IMEI from Settings > General > About when asked.

You should see: The carrier confirms eligibility, starts an unlock, or explains what balance or account step is still required.

  4. Do not expect Apple or the new carrier to force-unlock

If the original carrier says the phone is ineligible, Apple usually cannot remove that carrier lock, and a new provider typically cannot unlock a phone it did not sell. Follow the original carrier’s requirements instead.

You should see: You know whether to finish the original carrier’s unlock process or choose another device.

  5. Re-check About after the unlock

After the carrier says the unlock is complete, connect to Wi-Fi, restart the iPhone, and open Settings > General > About again to confirm Carrier Lock now reads “No SIM restrictions.”

You should see: Carrier Lock shows no SIM restrictions and the new SIM or eSIM works.

Extra tips

What to look for: The Carrier Lock line in Settings > General > About, especially “No SIM restrictions” versus “SIM locked,” plus any unlock eligibility message from the original carrier.

Before you change anything: Know which carrier originally provided the iPhone. Confirm the account is in good standing and any device balance requirements are met. Have a working Wi-Fi connection before swapping SIMs if possible. Never share your Apple Account password or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
