How do I fix a cordless phone that shows MUT and cannot hear callers?

Answer

MUT usually means the handset microphone or mute function is stuck on, or the base needs a power reset. Mute the call off if a mute key is active, then power-cycle the base for about 30 seconds before checking for error lights or codes.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Unplug only the base power adapter; avoid cutting phone service to other devices longer than needed.

Follow these steps

  1. Turn mute off on the handset

During or before a call, press the Mute key or soft key until MUT or Mute disappears from the display. Try speaking and listening again.

You should see: The mute indicator clears and the other party can hear you, or MUT returns immediately.

  2. Power-cycle the base unit

Unplug the base power adapter for 30 seconds, leave the phone line connected if possible, then plug the power back in and wait for the base to finish restarting.

You should see: Base lights return to a normal ready state and the handset reconnects.

  3. Reseat the handset and retry a call

Place the handset on the charger for a minute, then try an outgoing call and ask someone to call you back.

You should see: You can hear the caller and they can hear you without MUT staying on.

  4. Check for error lights or codes

Look at the base and handset for blinking lights, registration messages, or error codes. If only one handset fails while another works, re-register that handset using the model's official pairing steps.

You should see: You either restore normal calling or have a clear error pattern to look up in the phone manual.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether MUT or Mute stays on the handset display, any blinking lights on the base, and whether the problem affects every handset or only one.

Before you change anything: Confirm the phone brand and whether it is a cordless handset with a base unit. Note any error codes or blinking light patterns before resetting. Keep the phone line cord and power adapter plugged into the correct base ports after the reset. Do not share account passwords or codes with unexpected callers.
