How do I fix very low speaker volume on an iPhone?

Answer

Raise Ringer and Alerts in Settings > Sounds & Haptics, turn off Reduce Loud Audio under Headphone Safety, and center the Accessibility audio balance. If volume is still weak at full bar, try Reset All Settings, then book Apple Support for a sound or audio check if nothing changes.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Reset All Settings clears system preferences such as Wi-Fi passwords and wallpapers, but it should not delete personal photos or apps.

Follow these steps

  1. Raise Ringer and Alerts

Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the Ringer and Alerts slider all the way up. Also check that the side switch or Control Center is not forcing Silent mode if the issue is rings and alerts.

You should see: Rings, alerts, or media playback are louder, or you confirm the ringer was already at maximum.

  2. Turn off Reduce Loud Audio

Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety and turn off Reduce Loud Audio if it is on.

You should see: Headphone or media volume is no longer artificially limited by that setting.

  3. Center audio balance

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual and make sure the Balance slider is centered between left and right.

You should see: Sound plays evenly from both sides, and overall volume feels more normal.

  4. Reset All Settings

If volume is still weak at full bar, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This does not erase apps or photos, but Wi-Fi passwords and some preferences need to be set again.

You should see: After the iPhone restarts, volume controls behave normally without leftover limits.

  5. Get an Apple sound check

If settings resets do not help, use Apple Support to book a Genius Bar or mail-in service for an iPhone sound or audio issue.

You should see: Apple schedules a hardware check for the speaker or audio path.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the on-screen volume bar reaches full yet still sounds weak, whether Bluetooth audio is also limited, and whether Reduce Loud Audio or an uneven balance setting is enabled.

Before you change anything: Note whether the low volume affects the built-in speaker, headphones, Bluetooth, or all of them. Back up the iPhone if you plan to reset settings. Confirm you are changing Apple Settings on the phone, not a third-party volume app. Never share Apple ID codes with unexpected callers.
