How do I unlock a phone after paying off a carrier account in full?

Answer

After the final device payment posts, request an unlock or device release from the carrier that financed the phone using the account holder's credentials and IMEI. Wait for the carrier confirmation, then restart the phone with the intended SIM or complete a factory reset only if you are wiping it for a new owner.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never pay a third party that claims it can unlock any phone instantly after you already paid the carrier.
  • Erasing an iPhone without removing Find My leaves Activation Lock for the next user.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm payoff on the carrier account

Sign in to the carrier's official account site or app and verify the device payment status shows paid in full with no remaining installment balance.

You should see: The account shows the phone as paid off.

  2. Request the unlock or device release

Use the carrier's unlock request tool or support chat/phone. Provide the IMEI from Settings, General, About (or the equivalent Android status screen) and ask for confirmation when the unlock is active.

You should see: The carrier accepts the unlock request or gives an eligibility timeline.

  3. Complete setup on the phone

After unlock confirmation, insert the desired SIM or install the eSIM and restart. If the phone is being handed to a new owner, sign out of the previous iCloud/Google account and erase the device through official settings so Activation Lock does not remain.

You should see: The phone works on the intended network and is not blocked by the previous account lock.

  4. Escalate only through official support

If payoff shows complete but unlock is denied, ask for the specific policy reason and a supervisor or unlock department through the carrier's official channel. Do not pay an outside unlock service.

You should see: You either receive the unlock or a clear written reason tied to the account.

Extra tips

What to look for: Paid-off status on the device payment, unlock eligibility messages, SIM Locked status, and any Find My / Activation Lock still tied to the previous Apple ID.

Before you change anything: Confirm the final payment has posted on the carrier account. Have the account holder available for verification. If selling the phone, sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My first.
