How do I unlock an Android tablet after forgetting the PIN?

Answer

A forgotten tablet lock-screen PIN usually cannot be recovered or displayed. On most newer Android tablets the only official path is a factory reset from recovery mode, which erases local data unless a Google backup is available.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A factory reset permanently deletes local apps, messages, and files that were not backed up.

Follow these steps

  1. Try any remaining unlock options

On the lock screen, check for fingerprint, face unlock, a smart lock option, or a Forgot PIN link. Some older tablets briefly offer account-based unlock after failed attempts.

You should see: Either the tablet unlocks, or only the PIN entry screen remains with no recovery link.

  2. Confirm a Google backup exists

From another phone or computer, sign in at the official Google account page and check that photos, contacts, or device backups are available for that account.

You should see: You know what can be restored after a reset, or you confirm there is little cloud backup.

  3. Enter recovery mode and factory reset

Power the tablet off, then hold the model-specific recovery key combination (often Volume Up + Power) until the Android recovery menu appears. Use the volume keys to highlight Wipe data/factory reset and the power button to confirm.

You should see: The tablet erases user data and restarts to the initial setup screens.

  4. Set up the tablet again

Connect to Wi-Fi, sign in with the same Google account, and restore from backup if offered. Create a new PIN you can remember and store it somewhere safe offline.

You should see: The tablet finishes setup and returns to the home screen with the Google account restored.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the lock screen offers Forgot PIN, how many failed attempts are shown, and whether you still know the Google account email used on the tablet.

Before you change anything: Confirm the tablet brand and model if possible. Check whether important photos or files were backed up to Google Photos or another cloud service. Write down the Google account email that was used on the tablet before you reset. Never share your Google password or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
