How do you cancel an accidental paid upgrade on a United Airlines trip?
Answer
Open Manage Trip on united.com or the United app, select the reservation, and cancel or change the paid upgrade if the rules allow. If the upgrade is nonrefundable in self-service, contact United with the PNR and ask for a courtesy reversal of the accidental purchase.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Ignore third parties who offer to “hack” airline tickets for a fee.
Follow these steps
Open Manage Trip
Go to united.com Manage Trip or the United app, pull up the reservation, and view purchased upgrades or seats.
You should see: You see the paid upgrade type and any cancel/change controls.
Cancel through self-service if offered
Use the available cancel or change option for the upgrade and save the new itinerary email.
You should see: The upgrade is removed and a refund timeline appears, or self-service is blocked.
Contact United with clear wording
If needed, contact United support and explain you accidentally purchased a paid upgrade on reservation [PNR] and want it removed permanently.
You should see: An agent processes a reversal or explains the fare rule outcome.
Confirm the ticket state
Re-check Manage Trip and the confirmation email to ensure the upgrade is gone and only the intended cabin remains.
You should see: The reservation no longer shows the unwanted paid upgrade.

Extra tips
What to look for: A United confirmation shows a paid upgrade you did not intend to keep, and you want it removed.
Before you change anything: Find the confirmation email and PNR. Note whether it is a cabin upgrade, Economy Plus, or seat-only purchase. Do not buy another product hoping to offset it.
