How do you move phone service when the old phone has died?

Move the SIM or activate an eSIM on the working phone through your carrier account. Confirm the replacement shows No SIM restrictions before expecting AT&T activation to succeed.
Follow these steps
Check carrier lock on the replacement
On the replacement iPhone go to Settings > General > About and read Carrier Lock. For AT&T activation it should say No SIM restrictions. If it names another carrier, request an unlock from that carrier first.
You should see: You know whether the replacement phone can accept your SIM.
Move a physical SIM
With both phones off if possible, move the SIM from the dead phone’s tray into the replacement. Power on the replacement and wait for signal bars and your number.
You should see: The new phone shows cellular service with the existing number.
Use carrier eSIM transfer if there is no physical SIM
Sign in to your carrier app or account and choose transfer/activate eSIM for the replacement device. Follow the QR or on-screen activation steps.
You should see: An eSIM installs and the line activates on the replacement.
Confirm calling and messaging
Place a test call and send a text. If activation fails, contact the carrier with the replacement IMEI and ask them to provision the line.
You should see: Calls and texts work on the replacement phone.
