How do you switch cellular service to a new phone?
Answer
Insert or transfer the SIM/eSIM using your carrier’s official activate or transfer flow on the new phone, then restart and wait for signal; avoid deleting the old line until the new device shows service.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Deleting an eSIM before the new phone is confirmed working can leave you without service.
- Do not share carrier one-time codes with unexpected callers during a “device change.”
Follow these steps
Back up the old phone
Create an iCloud or Google backup so apps and data are safe before SIM changes.
You should see: A recent backup timestamp appears.
Transfer physical SIM or start eSIM transfer
Move the nano-SIM to the new phone, or use the carrier/Apple eSIM Quick Transfer or carrier app Activate flow.
You should see: The new phone begins configuring cellular.
Restart the new phone
After transfer completes, restart the new phone and wait a few minutes for the carrier name to appear.
You should see: Status bar shows carrier signal instead of No Service.
Update carrier settings
Install any Carrier Settings Update prompt, and confirm Mobile Data / Cellular is turned on.
You should see: Settings show the line as On with data available.
Contact the carrier if No Service remains
Use the carrier’s official app or support to refresh the SIM/eSIM on their side while you stay on Wi-Fi.
You should see: The carrier re-provisions the line and signal returns.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether the new phone shows No Service, Searching, or the carrier name after SIM/eSIM setup.
Before you change anything: Have your account PIN/passcode for the carrier. Back up the old phone first. Do not discard the old SIM until the new phone is working.
