Where do I find the activation code for a new Android phone?

Answer

The activation code usually comes from your mobile carrier’s order email, kit card, or account app—not from the phone maker. If the phone only says to insert a nano-SIM, you may need a physical SIM or the carrier’s eSIM QR/code instead of a separate Android unlock code.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never purchase phone activation or unlock codes from popups, social ads, or unexpected texts.

Follow these steps

  1. Decide whether the phone or the carrier is asking

Read the exact setup screen. If it asks for a Google account, that is sign-in, not a carrier activation code. If it asks for SIM, eSIM, ACT, or activation code, continue with the carrier steps below.

You should see: You know whether you need carrier activation details or only a Google account.

  2. Find the carrier’s code or QR details

Check the carrier order email, the SIM card sleeve, or the carrier’s official app/account page for an activation code, ACT code, or eSIM QR code. That is the code the phone needs for service.

You should see: You locate the carrier-provided activation details for this line.

  3. Use the IMEI only when the carrier asks for it

If the carrier site asks for the device IMEI, open the phone’s About screen or dial *#06# and enter that IMEI in the carrier’s official activation page—not into a random form.

You should see: The carrier accepts the IMEI and continues SIM or eSIM activation.

  4. Finish with SIM insert or eSIM install

Insert the nano-SIM if the plan includes one, or scan/enter the carrier eSIM details in Settings > Network & internet > SIMs (wording varies). Restart if the carrier instructs you to.

You should see: The phone shows signal or that the mobile plan is activating.

  5. Contact the carrier if no code exists

If there is no email code and no SIM kit, contact the carrier with your order details and IMEI. Ask them to resend activation info or provision the line.

You should see: The carrier provides a new activation code, QR code, or confirms the line is ready.

Extra tips

What to look for: Prompts that say activation code, ACT code, eSIM QR code, or insert a nano-SIM, plus any carrier order email or SIM packaging.

Before you change anything: Identify the carrier that provides the phone number or plan. Find the order confirmation email or the SIM/eSIM kit that came with the plan. Have Wi‑Fi available if the phone needs to download an eSIM. Do not buy activation codes from random websites or texts.
