Why can my Spark mobile text and email but not make voice calls?

Answer

When SMS and data work but voice calls do not, the problem is usually mobile voice service, call settings, or a local voice outage—not your whole phone plan. Check Spark’s outage status for Lower Hutt, then toggle Airplane Mode and confirm the Phone app can use the mobile line.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never share Spark account passwords, PINs, or one-time codes with unexpected callers claiming there is a network problem.

Follow these steps

  1. Check for a Spark voice outage

Open Spark’s official status page, app, or published outage notices and look for mobile voice issues affecting Lower Hutt. If an outage is listed, wait for Spark to restore service before changing phone settings.

You should see: You know whether this is a known area outage or only your handset.

  2. Refresh the mobile connection

Turn Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then turn it off. Wait until the Spark network name and signal return, then try a short outbound call.

You should see: The call connects, or you still get the same call failed result after a clean reconnect.

  3. Confirm calling is not blocked on the phone

Check Do Not Disturb, Focus modes, and any call-blocking or silence-unknown-callers settings. Make sure the Phone app has permission to use the microphone and that the correct SIM/line is selected for calls.

You should see: Call restrictions are off and the phone is set to use the Spark line for voice.

  4. Check VoLTE / HD calling

In mobile network settings, turn VoLTE, 4G calling, or HD Voice on if the option exists. Restart the phone, then try another call to a known-good number.

You should see: Voice calls complete over the mobile network.

  5. Test with another phone or SIM if available

If you can, place the Spark SIM in another unlocked phone, or try a different SIM in your phone. Compare whether voice calls work.

You should see: You can tell whether the issue follows the Spark SIM/account or the handset.

Extra tips

What to look for: A "call failed" message, endless ringing with no connect, or immediate drop when dialing, while texts, email, and a home landline still work.

Before you change anything: Note whether incoming calls, outgoing calls, or both fail. Confirm texts and mobile data still work. Check Spark’s official outage or status information for Lower Hutt before changing SIM or plan settings. Do not give account passwords or codes to anyone who calls claiming to "fix" Spark service.
