Why can't an iPhone 14 place outbound calls?

Answer

Reseat the SIM or reinstall the eSIM, toggle Airplane Mode, and check for Do Not Disturb or blocked carrier provisioning. If calls fail again after a short success, ask the carrier to refresh the line on the iPhone 14 IMEI.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Repeated SIM swaps can damage the tray if forced; stop if the tray binds.

Follow these steps

  1. Check call-blocking settings

Turn off Do Not Disturb/Focus. Go to Settings > Phone > Blocked Contacts and Silence Unknown Callers and temporarily disable Silence Unknown Callers while testing outbound dialing.

You should see: Settings are not suppressing normal call behavior.

  2. Refresh SIM/eSIM registration

Toggle Airplane Mode. For physical SIM, reseat it firmly. For eSIM, install a carrier update or redownload the eSIM if the carrier provides that option.

You should see: The carrier name returns and a test call connects.

  3. Enable Wi-Fi Calling as a bridge

On Wi-Fi, enable Wi-Fi Calling and try an outbound call to confirm the account can place calls while cellular voice is unstable.

You should see: Wi-Fi Calling works, pointing to a cellular voice provisioning issue.

  4. Ask the carrier to refresh the line

Contact the carrier with the iPhone 14 IMEI, explain that SIM reseating worked only briefly, and ask them to reprovision voice service. Reset Network Settings if they advise it after provisioning.

You should see: Outbound cellular calls remain working after the refresh.

Extra tips

What to look for: iPhone 14 outbound calls fail, maybe after a short period when a SIM fix seemed to work.

Before you change anything: Note whether you hear dial tone/ringing or an immediate error. Have the carrier account PIN ready. Avoid erasing the iPhone first.
