Why does an iPhone show SOS after switching carriers?

Answer

SOS usually means the phone can only reach emergency services because it hasn't yet picked up the new carrier's network settings. Restarting the phone and checking the cellular and carrier settings clears this in most transfers.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Back up the phone before trying a network settings reset, since that option also clears saved Wi-Fi passwords.

Follow these steps

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode

Turn Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, then turn it back off. This forces the phone to search for a network again.

You should see: The status bar either shows the new carrier's name and signal bars, or still shows SOS.

  2. Check the cellular plan in Settings

Open Settings > Cellular and confirm the new carrier's plan is listed and selected as the active line.

You should see: The new carrier's plan appears active, or is missing, which points to an activation issue.

  3. Update carrier settings

Go to Settings > General > About and wait about 30 seconds; if a carrier settings update is available, a prompt to install it usually appears automatically.

You should see: An update installs, or the About screen confirms carrier settings are current.

  4. Restart the iPhone

Fully restart the iPhone rather than only toggling Airplane Mode, since a restart re-establishes the network connection from scratch.

You should see: After restarting, the status bar shows normal signal bars and the carrier name, or still shows SOS.

  5. Manually reselect the network

Go to Settings > Cellular > Network Selection, turn off Automatic briefly, let it list available networks, then turn Automatic back on to force a fresh selection.

You should see: The phone reconnects to the new carrier's network automatically.

  6. Contact the new carrier if SOS continues

If SOS continues for more than a couple of hours after the transfer was confirmed complete, contact the new carrier's official support to check the line's activation status.

You should see: The carrier confirms the line is active or identifies a problem with the transfer.

Extra tips

What to look for: The exact wording in the status bar (SOS or SOS only), whether Settings > Cellular shows the new carrier's name, and how long it has been since the transfer was started.

Before you change anything: Confirm the transfer or number port was reported complete by the new carrier. Check whether the SIM is a physical card or an eSIM, since the fix can differ slightly. Have the account or order number from the new carrier handy. Avoid resetting the whole phone before trying simpler network fixes first.
