Why does an iPhone show SOS after switching carriers?

Answer

SOS usually means the iPhone is not registered on a working mobile network yet. After a carrier switch, manually select a Canadian network, confirm the phone is unlocked, turn on data roaming if needed, then reset network settings if the status still does not change.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Reset Network Settings erases saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN configurations, so have those details available before resetting.
  • Stop if a site or popup asks you to pay to unlock an account or install unknown software.

Follow these steps

  1. Try manual network selection

Go to Settings > Cellular > Network Selection, turn Automatic off, wait about 30 seconds, then choose one of the available Canadian networks such as Rogers, Bell, or TELUS.

You should see: The iPhone attaches to a named network, or the SOS status changes after a short wait.

  2. Confirm the phone is unlocked

Go to Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. If it says No SIM restrictions, the phone should accept another carrier’s SIM or eSIM. If it shows a lock message, contact the previous carrier about unlocking.

You should see: You know whether the phone is unlocked or still carrier locked.

  3. Turn on data roaming if needed

Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and turn Data Roaming on if your new Canadian plan requires it for temporary or partner-network service.

You should see: Data Roaming is on, and cellular data may become available once the network attaches.

  4. Toggle Airplane Mode

Open Control Center or Settings, turn Airplane Mode on for about 20 seconds, then turn it off and wait for the network to reappear.

You should see: The iPhone searches again and either shows a carrier name or returns a clearer status.

  5. Reset network settings

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Rejoin Wi-Fi afterward and check whether cellular service returns.

You should see: Saved Wi-Fi networks are cleared and the iPhone rebuilds cellular settings; SOS is often replaced by normal service if the account is active.

  6. Contact the new carrier if SOS remains

If the phone stays on SOS after these steps, ask the new Canadian carrier to confirm SIM/eSIM provisioning and that the line is active on their network.

You should see: The carrier either refreshes the line or explains what still needs to be activated.

Extra tips

What to look for: Status text such as SOS or SOS only, Carrier Lock reading No SIM restrictions in Settings > General > About, and whether Canadian networks like Rogers, Bell, or TELUS appear when Automatic network selection is turned off.

Before you change anything: Confirm the new Canadian carrier says the line is active. Check that the physical SIM is seated correctly or that the eSIM install finished. Note any Wi-Fi networks you use, because Reset Network Settings removes saved Wi-Fi passwords. Do not pay an unexpected fee or share codes with anyone who contacts you about unlocking the phone.
