Why does my Android phone suddenly ask for a PIN I never set?
Answer
This usually happens because a security update turned on a lock screen automatically, or a PIN that was set up long ago simply had not been used until the restart. Most phones let you recover access through the manufacturer's official device-finder service.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Using the remote erase option removes photos, apps, and files that were not backed up to the cloud.
- Never enter your PIN or password into a page reached through a text message or phone call claiming to be device support.
Follow these steps
Check for a forgotten screen lock
On the lock screen, try a few PINs you may have used before, such as an old device code or a birth year. After several incorrect tries, most phones show a 'Forgot PIN' or similar link.
You should see: Either the phone unlocks, or a recovery link appears that leads to account verification.
Locate the device from another device
On a computer or another phone, sign in to the manufacturer's official device-finder service using the same account that is signed in on the locked phone.
You should see: The service shows the phone's status and offers options such as unlock, lock, or erase.
Use the remote unlock or reset option
If a remote unlock option is available, use it to clear the lock screen. Only use the remote erase option as a last resort, since it removes all data on the phone.
You should see: The phone either unlocks directly, or is wiped and returns to the initial setup screen where you sign back in with the same account.
Set a screen lock you will remember
Once back in, open the lock screen or security settings and choose a PIN, pattern, or password you can recall, and write it down somewhere safe.
You should see: The phone locks and unlocks normally with the new code.

Extra tips
What to look for: The exact wording on the lock screen, and whether a 'Forgot PIN' or 'Forgot pattern' link appears after several attempts.
Before you change anything: Confirm you are signed in to the same account that was active on the phone before the lockout. Check whether the phone had already backed up photos and files to the cloud. Only use the manufacturer's official Find My Device page, never a link from a text or call. Never share a PIN, password, or recovery code with anyone who contacts you first.
