Why does my phone lose cell service while I'm out driving or traveling?

Answer

This usually means the area has weaker carrier coverage, the phone is stuck on a bad tower connection, or a temporary network setting needs a manual reset. Toggling Airplane Mode or restarting the phone in the affected area often restores service quickly.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not rely on a phone with no service for emergency calls in remote areas; SOS-style emergency calling is not guaranteed everywhere.
  • Ignore unsolicited texts claiming your line needs verification due to a coverage issue; confirm any account concern directly through the carrier's official app.

Follow these steps

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode

Turn Airplane Mode on, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it off again to force the phone to reconnect to the nearest tower.

You should see: The signal icon reappears with at least one bar, or confirms no towers are reachable nearby.

  2. Restart the phone

If toggling Airplane Mode does not help, restart the phone completely.

You should see: The phone reconnects to the network on startup, showing normal signal if coverage exists.

  3. Check the carrier's coverage map

On another device, or once back in range, open the carrier's official coverage map and check the specific route or area where service dropped.

You should see: You can see whether that area is a known coverage gap for the carrier.

  4. Consider Wi-Fi calling for known gaps

For routes traveled often, check whether the carrier supports Wi-Fi calling in those areas as a fallback.

You should see: Calls and texts can go through using Wi-Fi where available, even without cell signal.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the status bar shows 'No Service', 'SOS only', or a signal icon with no bars, and whether it happens in specific locations or randomly.

Before you change anything: Confirm whether the issue happens in the same locations every time or seems random. Check if others on the same carrier nearby also have no service, which points to a network issue rather than the phone. Confirm you are checking the carrier's official coverage map or status page. Never respond to a text claiming your line will be suspended unless you click a link or call back.
