Why is the camera black on an IdeaCentre or Windows desktop PC?
Answer
A black camera preview usually means Windows privacy is blocking the camera, the webcam driver is missing or disabled, or the camera is turned off in BIOS or with a physical privacy switch.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Download camera drivers only from Lenovo or Microsoft, not from third-party driver bundle sites.
Follow these steps
Allow camera access in Windows privacy settings
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and turn on camera access for the device and desktop apps, then reopen the Camera app.
You should see: The preview appears, or privacy settings were already allowed and the issue remains.
Check Device Manager for the webcam
Open Device Manager and look under Cameras, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers. Use View > Show hidden devices if nothing is listed.
You should see: The webcam appears normally, shows a warning icon, or is still missing.
Enable or update the camera device
If the camera is disabled, enable it. If it has a warning icon, choose Update driver or Uninstall device, then restart Windows and let it reinstall.
You should see: The camera enumerates cleanly and the preview works in the Camera app.
Check BIOS or hardware if the device is missing
If the webcam never appears and the LED stays off, restart and open the full BIOS/UEFI menu for the IdeaCentre and confirm any Camera or Onboard Devices options are enabled. Also reseat a USB webcam if one is used.
You should see: The camera becomes visible to Windows, or hardware service is clearly needed.
