Why is there no sound from a stereo receiver and how do I reset it?

No sound is often mute, very low volume, or the wrong source—not a failed speaker set. Raise volume past mute, confirm the built-in tuner or correct input, then use the receiver’s front-panel reset if needed.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- A factory-style receiver reset can erase presets and input assignments.
- Start with low volume after sound returns to avoid speaker damage or sudden loud output.
Follow these steps
Raise volume and disable mute
Turn the volume up to at least the mid range, such as 35 to 40 on many displays, and make sure MUTE is not enabled.
You should see: Sound appears, or the system remains silent for input checks.
Select a known built-in source
Switch to the built-in FM/AM tuner rather than an external HDMI or AUX device to test whether the amplifier path works.
You should see: Tuner audio plays through the speakers, or silence continues.
Perform a front-panel reset if silent
Turn the unit off, then press and hold BAND while pressing STANDBY/ON until RESET appears, following the model’s reset labeling if it differs slightly.
You should see: RESET appears and the receiver restarts with default audio settings.
Retest with low volume
After the reset, select the tuner or a simple input again and raise volume slowly.
You should see: Sound returns through the connected speakers.
