How do I change the phone number used for two-step verification?
Answer
Use the account's official security or 2-step verification settings while signed in on a trusted device, or use the provider's account recovery flow if codes only go to the old number.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not share one-time verification codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
Follow these steps
Use a trusted signed-in session
On any computer or phone that is still signed into the account without a new code, open Security or Sign-in & security settings.
You should see: You reach the page that lists two-step verification methods.
Replace the old phone number
Select the phone number ending in the outdated digits, remove or change it, and add your current number. Complete any confirmation prompts sent to the new number.
You should see: The account lists the new phone number as the active verification method.
Start official recovery if locked out
If no trusted session exists, use the provider's Forgot password or Can't access your code recovery flow and follow the identity checks exactly.
You should see: Recovery either restores access or clearly states what proof is still required.
Save backup methods
After regaining access, add a backup email, authenticator app, or printable backup codes so a future number change is less disruptive.
You should see: At least one backup sign-in method is active besides the phone number.

Extra tips
What to look for: A Complete Your Sign In or similar prompt sending codes to an outdated number, and whether any trusted device is still signed in
Before you change anything: Check whether a computer or app is still signed in without needing a new code. Locate backup codes if you saved them. Have access to the account email inbox. Never share one-time codes with unexpected callers.
