How do I fix a new Samsung phone that does not work after a store data transfer?

Answer

After a store transfer, first confirm the Straight Talk SIM or eSIM is active, unlock with the old phone’s screen lock if Smart Switch carried it over, then force-restart the Samsung phone while it stays plugged in.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Factory resetting too early can wipe a partial transfer; finish lock-screen and carrier checks first.
  • Straight Talk activation details are carrier-specific; use official Straight Talk account tools rather than random links from texts.

Follow these steps

  1. Enter the old phone’s screen lock if prompted

If the new phone asks for a PIN, pattern, password, or Google verification from the previous device, enter the old phone’s lock exactly as it was. Samsung Smart Switch often carries that lock method over during transfer.

You should see: Setup continues past the lock or transfer verification screen.

  2. Confirm Straight Talk service on the new phone

Make sure the Straight Talk SIM is seated or the eSIM is installed. Check that the status bar shows signal, then open the Phone app and try a test call or dial the carrier care short code from your plan materials if calls fail.

You should see: The new phone shows network signal and can place a call or reach account care.

  3. Force restart the Samsung while plugged in

Plug the phone into power. Press and hold the power key and volume down together for about 10–20 seconds until the screen goes black and the Samsung logo reappears, then release.

You should see: The phone reboots cleanly and apps or setup screens become responsive again.

  4. Sign in and finish Google or Samsung setup

Complete any remaining Google Account, Samsung account, and app update prompts. Reinstall any missing apps from Play Store if the store transfer only copied some of them.

You should see: The home screen is usable, key apps open, and carrier service remains available.

  5. Retry Smart Switch only if data is still missing

If contacts or photos never arrived, open Smart Switch on both phones or use a cable transfer again, choosing only the data types you still need.

You should see: Missing data copies over without breaking the new phone’s screen lock or carrier setup.

Extra tips

What to look for: Setup or lock screen asking for the old phone’s PIN, pattern, or password; missing Straight Talk service; apps that opened on the old phone but fail on the new one.

Before you change anything: Keep the old phone nearby until the new one works. Confirm you still have the Straight Talk SIM, account login, or eSIM QR details. Charge the new phone and leave it plugged in during a force restart. Never share account passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
