How do I fix email that stopped working on an Android phone after a password change?

Answer

Open the email app, sign in again with the new password, and allow notifications. If mail still will not load, go to Settings > Apps > your email app > Storage and tap Clear Cache, then restart the phone—avoid Clear Data unless you are ready to sign in again from scratch.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Clear Data signs you out and removes local app data; use Clear Cache first.

Follow these steps

  1. Sign in with the new password

Open the email app (Gmail or your provider’s app). If it shows a sign-in or password error, enter the new password and complete any 2-step verification prompts from the official app screens only.

You should see: The inbox loads, or you get a clear authentication error to act on.

  2. Clear the email app cache

Go to Settings > Apps > your Email/Gmail app > Storage, then tap Clear Cache (not Clear Data yet). Return to the app and pull to refresh the inbox.

You should see: Stale login or sync data is cleared and messages begin loading, or the sign-in prompt returns cleanly.

  3. Restart the phone

Restart the Android phone, reconnect to Wi‑Fi or mobile data, open the email app again, and send yourself a test message from another account if possible.

You should see: New mail arrives and sending works, or the same error remains for the next step.

  4. Remove and re-add the account if needed

If mail still fails, remove the account from the app or Settings > Passwords & accounts / Users & accounts, then add it again with the new password. Use Clear Data on the email app only if re-adding still fails and you accept signing in again.

You should see: The account syncs with the new password on a fresh setup.

Extra tips

What to look for: Authentication failed, incorrect password, or a messages/sync error in the email app after the password was changed.

Before you change anything: Confirm the new email password works on a web browser first. Note whether you use Gmail, Juno, or another provider’s app. Prefer Clear Cache before Clear Data. Never share your email password or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
