How do I fix an Apple Watch that will not recharge before sending it for repair?

Answer

Before sending an Apple Watch in for battery repair, rule out a deeply drained battery and a bad charger. Leave it on an official magnetic charger for at least 30 minutes undisturbed, then check Battery settings on the paired iPhone if it wakes.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Unpairing or erasing the watch before repair can affect unlock and payment setup; follow Apple’s repair guidance.

Follow these steps

  1. Clean and reseat the magnetic charger

Wipe the watch back and charger puck with a dry lint-free cloth. Align the watch so it snaps firmly to the charger and connect the charger to a wall adapter, not a low-power USB port.

You should see: The watch sits flush on the charger with a stable magnetic connection.

  2. Charge undisturbed for 30 minutes

Leave the Apple Watch on the charger for a full 30 minutes without moving it or pressing buttons repeatedly. A deeply drained watch can take that long before any charge indicator appears.

You should see: A red low-battery icon, charging animation, or watch face eventually appears.

  3. Force restart if it wakes but still will not charge normally

If the screen responds but charging still fails, hold the side button and Digital Crown together until the Apple logo appears, then place it back on the charger.

You should see: The watch restarts and either begins charging or shows a clearer battery status.

  4. Check Battery settings from the iPhone

On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app, then go to My Watch and look for Battery or related power information. Note battery health or charging messages if shown.

You should see: You can see whether the phone reports charging, a battery fault, or no connection.

  5. Start Apple repair if charging still fails

If a known-good Apple charger and a 30-minute undisturbed charge still leave the watch dead, use Apple Support or check coverage in the Watch app to arrange service. Sign in with the Apple ID tied to the watch when Apple asks during repair setup.

You should see: You have ruled out simple charger issues and can proceed to official battery or hardware service.

Extra tips

What to look for: No lightning bolt or charge screen after several minutes, a red low-battery icon, or a watch that only responds after a long charge attempt.

Before you change anything: Use an Apple-certified magnetic charger and a known-good USB power adapter. Remove thick case accessories that block the charger alignment. Back up the Apple Watch to the paired iPhone before any repair or unpair steps when possible. Never share Apple ID passwords or verification codes with unexpected callers.
