How do I fix a Nest thermostat that will not merge with my Nest or Google account?

Answer

This usually means the thermostat and the phone app are signed into different Google accounts, or a stuck setup needs a clean restart of both the phone and the thermostat.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Factory resetting a Nest thermostat can remove schedules and require full re-setup, so use restart and account checks first.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm the same Google account

Open the Google Home or Nest app and check the account email in use. Make sure it matches the Google account you expect to own the thermostat.

You should see: You can see the signed-in account email and confirm whether it matches the intended Nest or Google account.

  2. Check the thermostat for any code

Look at the thermostat display for a TH code or other short error message. Write down the exact text if anything appears.

You should see: You either confirm there is no code, or you have the exact code to use if account checks still fail.

  3. Restart the phone

Fully power off the phone that runs the Google Home or Nest app, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on and reopen the app.

You should see: The app launches again and can refresh the device list.

  4. Restart the thermostat

On the Nest thermostat, open Settings, choose Restart, and let the device finish rebooting before checking the app again.

You should see: The thermostat comes back online and either appears under the account or shows a clearer setup or error state.

  5. Retry setup only if the device still does not appear

If the thermostat still will not merge with the account, remove any incomplete thermostat entry in Google Home, then start setup again while signed into the correct Google account.

You should see: The thermostat begins a fresh setup under the intended account, or Google Home shows a specific error you can act on.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the thermostat screen shows any TH or error code, and which Google account email is signed in on the Google Home or Nest app.

Before you change anything: Confirm the exact Nest model and that you are using the official Google Home or Nest app. Note which Google account email you expect the thermostat to use. Do not factory reset the thermostat until simpler account and restart steps fail. Never share passwords or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
