How do I recover a forgotten Google password after replacing a lost iPhone?

Answer

Use Google’s official Forgot password flow at accounts.google.com from a familiar device and location, then complete recovery by email, phone, or other saved methods. After the password is reset, add the Google account again in iPhone Settings.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never share your Google password or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you after a phone theft.
  • Stop if a site asks you to pay to unlock the Google account or install unknown software.
  • If you no longer have access to recovery email or phone, Google may not be able to restore the account immediately.

Follow these steps

  1. Start official Google password recovery

On a computer or the new iPhone browser, go to accounts.google.com, enter the Gmail address, then choose Forgot password. Stay on Google’s own pages only.

You should see: Google shows verification choices such as recovery email, phone, or Try another way.

  2. Use a familiar device and location

If Google asks for more proof, continue from a device, browser, or place you have used with that account before. Avoid public shared computers when possible.

You should see: Google accepts more recovery options or sends a verification challenge you can complete.

  3. Complete the recovery challenge

Open any recovery email or SMS from Google and follow the exact action it requests, such as tapping a link or entering a code. Do not forward codes to anyone else.

You should see: Google lets you create a new password for the account.

  4. Add Google on the new iPhone

After the password is reset, open Settings > Mail (or Settings > Apps > Mail) > Accounts > Add Account > Google, or open the Gmail app, and sign in with the new password.

You should see: The Google account signs in on the new iPhone without the old password prompt failing.

Extra tips

What to look for: The exact Google prompt on the new iPhone, any recovery email Google sends, and which recovery options appear after Forgot password.

Before you change anything: Use only accounts.google.com or the Forgot password link on Google’s own sign-in page. Prefer a familiar computer or network you have used with that Gmail account before. Write down any recovery email or phone still on the account. Never share passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
